Quick facts
- Identify cracks, penetrations and ponding areas before coating
- Clean and repair the roof before applying a waterproofing system
- Reinforcement cloth may be used in appropriate repair details
- A coating is most effective when the underlying surface is sound
Find the entry points first
Roof leaks can come through cracks, construction joints, pipe penetrations, parapet details or areas where water ponds. The wet spot inside the building may not sit directly below the roof defect, so inspection should cover the surrounding area.
Prepare the slab
Remove dirt, algae, loose coatings and weak concrete. Repair cracks and defects with suitable material. A waterproofing coat applied over dirt or unstable material can fail even when the product itself is suitable.
Use the right product for the detail
Broad roof areas, cracks, joints and penetrations may not all need the same treatment. Reinforcement cloth, crack filler or cementitious repair can be combined with a waterproof coating where appropriate to the system.
Plan for drainage
If water remains ponded for long periods, correcting falls or drainage may be as important as the coating. Waterproofing should be treated as a system rather than only a colour layer on top of the slab.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just paint over a leaking roof?
Not always. Cracks, weak areas and drainage problems should be repaired or prepared before coating.
Does waterproofing replace structural repair?
No. Structural defects require appropriate repair first.
