Quick facts
- Remove debris, oil, dust and loose coatings
- Check existing paint or tile for bond
- Repair defects before decorative application
- Use levelling material where the required finish needs a smoother base
Cleaning is not the same as preparation
A floor can look clean but still have sealers, oil, laitance or weak paint that prevents good adhesion. Mechanical preparation such as sanding or grinding may be needed depending on the surface.
Deal with cracks and weak areas
Loose concrete and unstable cracks should be repaired before the decorative layer. A surface coating cannot stop structural movement below it.
Level only where needed
If the finish follows the existing texture, visible dips and ridges will remain. Self-levelling cement or repair material can be used where a flatter base is required, but application thickness and curing should be planned before the final finish.
Separate preparation in the quotation
Application rates often assume a clean, level surface. If debris removal, sanding, grinding or levelling is needed, request that work explicitly so the labour and materials are clear before installation starts.
Frequently asked questions
Can epoxy go over dusty concrete?
No. Dust and loose material can interfere with adhesion and should be removed.
Will epoxy hide an uneven floor?
Not necessarily. Many coatings follow the existing texture, so levelling should be completed first when needed.
Is sanding always required?
Not every surface needs the same preparation. The method depends on the existing coating, contamination and surface profile.
